1-Hour Glucose Instructions

The 1 Hour Glucola test is designed to screen fro gestational diabetes. The screening test is usually performed between 27-29 weeks of gestation. Gestational diabetes results in higher than normal blood sugar levels and can lead to pregnancy complications if not diagnosed and treated. For this reason we recommend that ALL women undergo screening.

  • You may eat or drink a normal breakfast or lunch prior to the test, BUT PLEASE AVOID ANYTHING THAT CONTAINS EXCESSIVE SUGAR. For example, do not eat candy bars, drink soda or fruit juice, or eat any sugary cereal.

  • Drink 10 ounces (entire bottle) of the glucose drink and NOTE THE TIME. You must drink all 10 ounces within a 5 minute period. After drinking the glucose you may only have water until you blood is drawn.

  • Your blood needs to be drawn precisely 1 hour after you drink the glucose. When you arrive at the office please let the receptionist know that you are doing the glucose test. Let her know the time that you finished the drink. Please make sure you arrive at the office at least 15 minutes before your blood is due to be drawn.

  • Keep the glucose refrigerated (it tastes better cold) but DO NOT freeze and DO NOT add ice.

  • Please do not hesitate to call the office at (303) 320-8499 if you have any additional questions.
