Over the Counter Medications that are safe during Pregnancy

Below is a list of over the counter medications that you can safely take during pregnancy. If any condition lasts more than one week or worsens on the medication, please call the office. Also call us if you have a reaction to any of the medications.

Common Colds, Cough, Nasal Congestion, Seasonal Allergies
  • Actifed (pseudoephedrine & reiprolidine)
  • Robitussin (guaifenesin)
  • Benadryl
  • Robitussin DM
  • Chlor-Trimenton (chlorpheniramine)
  • Sudafed (pseudoephedrine)
  • Claritin
  • Sudafed Cough & Cold (sudafed/robitussin/tylenol)
  • Dextromethorphan (cough suppressant)
  • Dimetapp
  • Thera-Flu
  • Mucinex
  • Drixoral
  • Vicks vaporub
Diarrhea
  • Imodium AD
  • Kaopectate
Headaches- call if no relief!!
  • Tylenol (acetaminophen) **Limit 4 gm/day**
  • Extra strength tylenol
Heartburn/Indigestion
  • Maalox
  • Tagamet
  • Mylanta
  • Tums
  • Pepcid
  • Zantac
  • Rolaids
Hemorrhoids
  • Anusol- cream or suppositories
  • Preparation H
  • Tucks wipes
Nausea- call if no relief
  • Benadryl
  • Dramamine
  • Ginger capsules- 250 mg 4x each day
  • Vitamin B6- 25- 50 mg 3-4 x each day (do not take more than 200 mg/day)
Skin Rashes
  • Aveeno
  • Caladryl
  • Benadryl cream
  • 1% Hydrocortisone cream (used sparingly)
Sore Throats
  • Any throat lozenges
  • Call if fever or white patches on throat
Stool Softeners
  • Citrucel
  • Metamucil
  • Colace
  • Milk of Magnesia – laxative
  • Fibercon
Vaginal Yeast Infections
  • Monistat (miconazole) - 7 day
  • Mycelex or Lotrimin (clotrimazole) - 7 day
